Designing to a theme – Art Deco

This award winning project was a renovation of the entire first floor of a DC row house. The scope of work included a kitchen renovation, adding a laundry room and powder room, moving some exterior doors and windows, adding a French door and transom that opens to the back yard, and decking out the dining room with fine moldings

The footprint of the existing kitchen was too small for the family of three who also like to entertain. The new kitchen will need to be larger and provide more storage and countertop space. Due to the configuration of doors in the small kitchen, there is nowhere to mingle without always being in the way. The new kitchen should be more conducive to entertaining and allow for improved traffic flow.

The existing laundry room is located in the unfinished basement. Incorporating a new laundry room with plenty of storage and a deep laundry sink on the main living level is desired.

There is no powder room on the main living level and one is desired for inclusion in the new renovation. The clients also request that we elevate the style in the dining room and bring an Art Deco flair to this space via trim, moldings, and fixtures.

Finesse Design Remodeling tastefull enhanced the client’s 1920’s Washington DC home thorough a thoughtful and well constructed renovation. By expanding into an adjacent unused study, the larger and more open kitchen easily handles the demands of the busy family and has hosted many events and celebrations. A portion of the space was transformed into a new powder room echoing Art Deco design elements incorporated throughout the renovation. A generous French door was installed off the dining room letting in an abundance of natral light. New millwork including crown molding, chair rail, and picture moldings were incorporated throughout the dining room reinforcing the Art Deco design and adding a formal touch to the space. A new laundry room was incorporated off the kitchen and a beautiful stained glass door, custom deisgned by Finesse, was installed between the two spaces.

However, the homeowners have said it best: “With expert direction from Finesse we are taking the design back to the 1920’s, while doubling the size and function of our kitchen and also adding a powder room and laundry. Absolutely thrilled beyond words with the imagination, design and build precision Finesse brought to our home, but Elizabeth and Brian have become transformers of our home and great friends during this process. Most people never want to see their contractors again when work is complete – we can’t wait to have them back.  Finesse does incredible work and makes the process fun. ”
